PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy

Dr. Sharma is now offering PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy at the Center for Rheumatic Diseases

What is PRP Therapy used to treat?

PRP Therapy can be used to treat:
• osteoarthritis of the knee
• chronic tendon and ligament injuries in the arms or legs when other treatments have failed to bring about healing.

Does PRP Therapy work?

Research evidence has shown that platelet-rich plasma injections (PRP)  therapy can reduce the pain and stiffness in mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee and can improve knee function. In chronic injuries of tendons and ligaments, research has suggested that PRP therapy may stimulate or speed up the healing process and shorten healing time for injuries. It can even benefit chronic injuries.

How is the PRP Therapy procedure done?

PRP injections are prepared by taking one or a few tubes of your own blood. This blood sample is spun in a centrifuge to separate the blood into its various components: red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets. The “platelet-rich” portion of the spun sample is extracted and mixed with a plasma liquid base, then it is injected directly into the area that we are treating. Ultrasound imaging may be used to guide the injection.

Will my insurance cover PRP Therapy?

At this time, PRP Therapy is not covered by private insurance plans, nor by Medicare or Medicaid.

What are the risks of PRP Therapy?

PRP injection is a low-risk procedure and does not usually cause major side effects. There may be some discomfort and bruising at the injection site for for 1-2 days after the injection, but if you have more significant pain, or pain of longer duration, you should contact us promptly. The procedure involves a blood draw, so you should make sure you are hydrated and have eaten beforehand to prevent feeling lightheaded.

When should I consider PRP Therapy?

For knee osteoarthritis, you could consider PRP Therapy if you have persistent knee pain despite standard treatments such as Physical Therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and local steroid injections.
